Fields of Gold / by Karim Nader

In the south of Lebanon, the land is fertile and blossoms in various colored flowers and fruit. Retreating in such a land with its wondrous valleys, mountain and sea view offers the possibility of floating above ground.

Once again, the project does not seek to reproduce nature, that would be a vain attempt. In the ‘miesian’ tradition, and even ‘corbusian,’ radical orthogonality is simply overlaid on an existing terrace that flattens the land, one floating volume for a monumental master bedroom clad in corrugated local ‘spuma’ stone in a perspectival effect to frame the view, another for a guest volume with all the additional bedrooms. Under the master bedroom volume, a simple glass box can open towards a system of outdoor terraces, patios and waterfall. Under the glass volume, the pre-existing terrace opens up towards a pool garden, terraced gardens, and an orchard beyond, nature gradually dematerializing the man-made, step by step.

On the walls, an occasional onyx or travertine give away a certain lavishness, but once again the natural vein as ornament, like in Barcelona.
